The book focuses on the early period of the history of the , covering approximately 250 years, aiming to highlight the unique structural principles of the . The backbone of the book revolves around two aspects of the . First, regarding the holistic nature of the , we must analyze it from its unique form (such as the principles of tonal patterns and stanza division), its structure (i.e., word formation methods), or its function (such as the relationship between subjects and objects). Second, by tracing the diachronic aspects of the development of literary genres, we explore the connections between great scholars across history from a historical perspective. The is a product directly inspired by popular literature, and before it evolved into a "genre," it was known as popular quci or entertaining melodies. The continuous effort of scholars to transform popular quci into literary is clearly evident in the history of the 's development. This is the main argument of this chapter. Next, the book examines five great scholars, all representing the early period of the history of the : Wen Tingyun, Wei Zhuang, Li Yu, Liu Yong, and Su Shi, providing insights into the developmental process of the .
