Features: This book is based on the requirements of the "Full-time Secondary School English Teaching Syllabus" regarding reading, with a focus on stimulating interest as the starting point. It includes 188 entries composed of humor, jokes, fables, popular science, and more. The aim is to "provide students with richer educational and teaching resources, helping them broaden their horizons, enrich their language knowledge, expand their vocabulary, and understand the society and culture of English-speaking countries." The book is divided into two parts. Part 1 (Entries 1-89) each comes with simple illustrations to aid in better comprehension. Each entry is followed by 5 true-or-false questions to test whether students can correctly interpret the literal and deeper meanings of words, phrases, and sentences based on the provided information. The second part (Entries 90-188) no longer includes illustrations, primarily transitioning students to gradually adapt to thinking in a purely textual form—relying only on words, sentences, and paragraphs for comprehension. Each entry is followed by 5 multiple-choice questions to test whether students can grasp the main idea and key details of the material, as well as the facts and evidence used to support them. This includes understanding both concrete facts and abstract concepts, grasping the overall context of the text (i.e., the relationships between sentences and paragraphs), and being able to reason and make judgments. Key vocabulary and phrases that should be mastered are highlighted in bold. At the end of the book, there are reference translations and answers. This book is suitable for the new curriculum standards for English levels 4-8 and is designed to cater to students at all levels. For those whose English reading skills are temporarily not yet ideal but are eager to improve quickly within a short period, this book can open a door to reading. For those with decent English reading skills but in need of further improvement, this book can broaden their horizons and keep them engaged in effective learning. Through reading and thinking simultaneously, students can monitor themselves, build a rational cognitive structure, and gradually network their knowledge, ultimately developing sustainable learning abilities.
