Features: The Beiyang Warlord Group was a notorious yet significant political and military faction in the modern history of China. This group rose and flourished during the period of major changes and rapid transformation in Chinese society before and after the 1911 Revolution, and it long dominated the political arena, shaping history and making a name for itself. The complex historical phenomena it created—such as political struggles, regional divisions, and civil wars—have left behind numerous unique topics awaiting serious interpretation and discussion. This objective reality has made the study of Beiyang Warlord history one of the important fields in the research of modern Chinese history, especially in the past two decades, which has become a hot topic of interest among historians. However, due to the time span of Beiyang Warlord history covering both the late Qing and Republican periods of modern Chinese history, with the 1911 Revolution and the May Fourth Movement marking significant changes in China's political system and social nature, the intricacies and the vast historical facts involved make it difficult to evaluate and comment on. As a result, current research on Beiyang Warlord history has primarily focused on micro-level studies of individual figures, events, and localized phenomena, while comprehensive macro-level works on this period have been limited to only two general histories: "A Brief History of the Beiyang Warlords" written by Professor Lai Xinxia in the 1950s and "A Draft History of the Beiyang Warlords," edited by him in the early 1980s. These two works undoubtedly played a role in breaking new ground and laying a foundation for the study of Beiyang Warlord history and had a significant impact in academia. However, due to their limited length, the breadth and depth of their discussions were constrained, making them inadequate to meet the growing demand for a more detailed understanding of the historical realities of this turbulent period in modern Chinese history. To address this, Professor Lai Xinxia, in the early 1990s, led the compilation of a large-scale, five-volume, over 3 million-word reference work titled "Beiyang Warlords" (one of the series of "Materials on Modern Chinese History"), laying an even stronger foundation for research. Subsequently, he immediately invited collaborators to begin writing a true, comprehensive history of the Beiyang Warlords. After nearly a decade of revisions and refinements, "A History of the Beiyang Warlords," a complete, systematic, detailed, and objective account of the rise, development, conflicts, decline, and eventual collapse of the Beiyang Warlords, as well as an in-depth revelation of the truths behind the historical phenomena it created and the true identities of the figures involved, has finally been published by Nankai University Press. The publication of this new work, which is imbued with the author's decades of dedicated research on Beiyang Warlord history, marks a new height in the study of this field. Given that the author continuously reflected on and discussed some of the unresolved, broadly debated issues in the field during the writing process—such as the research object of Beiyang Warlord history, the division of historical stages, the definition of warlords, and the characteristics of Beiyang Warlords—while also systematically reviewing the progress of Beiyang Warlord history research since the founding of the People's Republic of China, appropriately incorporating the findings of scholars both domestically and internationally, and maintaining the guiding principles of historical materialism and dialectical history, this over 1 million-word "A History of the Beiyang Warlords" presents a fresh perspective. Its structure is rigorous and logical, its content is rich and credible, its arguments are thorough and well-supported, its viewpoints are clear and prominent, and its language is fluent and readable. It can be said to not only reflect the author's profound expertise in the study of Beiyang Warlord history but also represent the current overall research level in this field.
