This book features Huang Jun's illustrations of ink-and-Brush portraits. In traditional Chinese figure painting, the portrayal of women (shi-nü) has a long history and holds a significant position. The female figures in the from the Chu period can be considered the earliest surviving shi-nü painting in China, though it was still in its early stages. During the Jin Dynasty, shi-nü painting saw some development, such as Gu Kaizhi's Nü Shi Zhen Tu (Admonitions of the Instructress to the Palace Ladies) and Luoshen Tu (The Lady of the Luo River), which demonstrated more mature techniques and formats but were still not fully refined. The Tang Dynasty marked a peak in the history of Chinese painting. In the Song Dynasty, shi-nü painting became more narrative and folkloric, with figures rendered in a realistic style—vivid, dignified, detailed, as seen in Han Chen's Zhuangjing Shi Nü Tu (Adorned Women). During the Qing Dynasty, the style of shi-nü painting became overly delicate and weak, detached from reality, with figures portrayed as slender and coquettish, losing the healthy and dynamic artistic spirit of the Tang and Song periods. However, it did absorb some positive elements from literati painting, emphasizing graceful postures and a preference for elegant and ethereal styles. It also incorporated the strengths of Western painting, paving the way for future innovations in figure painting. Throughout history, shi-nü painting evolved from its origins to its formation and development, undergoing over two thousand years of gradual transformation, becoming an outstanding part of Chinese cultural heritage and providing rich inspiration for modern painting innovation.
