Features: The highly anticipated 2004 national college entrance examination (Gaokao) came to a close as scheduled. This year's English test continued to focus on assessing language communicative competence. Exam papers from 11 provinces and municipalities revealed at least three key characteristics. First, prominent regional features; second, a balanced emphasis on knowledge and skill development; third, stability with changes, committed to Gaokao reform.
Regarding the prominent regional features, it is evident that this year 11 provinces and municipalities independently developed their Gaokao papers, each with distinct characteristics in terms of question direction, content selection, and format. Taking the Beijing English exam paper as an example, it maintained its two-essay format but saw significant changes in one of the essays, which involved expository and argumentative writing, somewhat resembling the writing section of the IELTS exam. The cloze test and reading comprehension passages featured new themes and were illustrated, emphasizing the selection, discrimination, and processing of linguistic information. Therefore, the exam paper stood out both in form and content, further aligning the English test with global standards.
