Features: In China's underdeveloped market economy environment, every industry has created and continues to create millionaires, billionaires, and even more, driving a group of enterprises to rise overnight like miracles. It has been proven that every industry is attractive, and every industry can allow certain companies to achieve substantial profits. Should one take a spoonful or drink the entire ocean? Entrepreneurs face a difficult choice. The difficulty lies in the fact that, on one hand, capital chases profits, and a growing enterprise must find sufficient profit space—taking a spoonful is too little. On the other hand, diversification implies resource dispersion, management challenges, and other very real issues. Even if one drinks the entire ocean, there must be the capacity to do so. The rule of diversification—avoiding the risks of diversification and refining the success principles of diversification. Six suggestions for diversification operations: Start from the existing capabilities of the enterprise and strive for related diversification as much as possible; strengthen management capabilities to ensure diversification moves in the intended direction; adjust product and industry structures in a timely manner to respond to market and technological changes; emphasize resource sharing and pursue synergy; adjust the organizational structure based on the depth and breadth of diversification to form an overall strategy; effectively deploy core competitiveness in key areas. This is a deep summary of the rules of diversification, reflecting an objective behavioral requirement while also being a success rule that must be followed. Combined with the actual situation of the enterprise, seizing opportunities for diversification and specializing are two different development paths, and their strategies themselves have no inherent superiority or inferiority. Success or failure depends on the enterprise itself, not on the difference between diversification and specialization. This argument has actually been deeply rooted in the thinking of pragmatic entrepreneurs. We must recognize the current situation, which is the basic premise for diversification operations. Advocating for diversification and opposing it are two different voices. It reflects a fundamental fact: China's market economy environment is gradually maturing, but the market economy system remains imperfect. In such an environment, it is understandable for many entrepreneurs to engage in diversification, but they must proceed with caution. For large enterprises to achieve sustainable growth, they must inevitably turn to diversification—a view that has been fundamentally proven in enterprises in countries like the United States, Europe, and Japan. Under a market economy system, diversification is not only a common growth strategy for enterprises but also a field of research internationally that has moved beyond the question of whether to diversify to the stage of how to diversify and what kind of diversification is truly effective.
