Features: Without poetry, our speech has no meaning. Or it may have meaning, but that meaning has nothing to do with us. To say something foolish, looking back at human history over five thousand years, what made the brief twentieth-century 1980s suddenly emerge? And what made it worth being recorded, even celebrated? I assert that it is poetry. Third-party poetry. In 1949, when the Nationalist government withdrew from Nanjing, the American (John Leighton Stuart) said this: "The hope for China's peaceful evolution should be placed in the third and fourth generations." This statement was widely disseminated in China through Mao Zedong's famous article "Others,." In the early 1980s, the third generation had grown up. They adopted the term "third generation" as their own name, sparking a sweeping Third Generation Poetry Movement across China. This book is a record, reflection, and summary of that movement.
