Features: Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio is a work of positive romanticism. Its romantic spirit is primarily reflected in the creation of positive ideal characters, especially in the female figures transformed from flower spirits and fox demons. It is also evident in the use of romantic techniques. The author skillfully employs dreams and a wealth of fictional plots of ascending to heaven, descending to earth, and illusory transformations to break free from the constraints of reality, express his ideals, and resolve contradictions that cannot be solved in the real world. Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio is a treasure of Chinese classical fiction. This collection of short stories was copied and circulated even before it was published and gained even wider dissemination afterward. By the mid-19th century, it had spread abroad, with translations available in over twenty languages, including English, French, German, Russian, and Japanese. Many stories in Strange Tales from a Chinese Studio were originally passed down in folk traditions, retaining characteristics of primal religion. In primal religious beliefs, the soul is considered the essence of life and the source of vitality in all things. Therefore, when depicting various fox spirits, ghosts, and demons, the tales often focus on their spiritual essence while omitting their physical forms. This tendency is particularly evident in stories of reincarnation and resurrection through the bodies of others. In The Lady of the Lu Ministry, the protagonist is reborn as the daughter of the Lu Ministry official, and in Little Xie, the autumn spirit revives by inhabiting the body of Cai’s daughter. Compared to their previous incarnations, these resurrected women are completely different in appearance, yet their souls remain unchanged. They both continue to win the affection of their loved ones, and their romantic relationships are not affected by their altered appearances. In Lian Xiang, the female ghost of Li is reborn by inhabiting the body of the wealthy girl Zhang Yan'er. After reviving, she gradually regains her original appearance. The plot of this story is particularly fantastical, but it still reflects the belief in the primacy of the soul, with physical appearance being secondary.
