Features: The Chinese Academy of Social Sciences (CASS) is the highest institution for humanities and social sciences in China, entrusted with the noble mission of inheriting civilization, innovating theories, advising the government, educating people, and serving society. The Institute of Law is one of its many research institutes. On the occasion of the 45th anniversary of the Institute of Law, we decided to invite law scholars who have made outstanding achievements in their respective fields to select their best works over the years and publish them in the form of a series titled "Essentials of Law of the Chinese Academy of Social Sciences." Each volume begins with an academic biography. The academic biography is written by the author or commissioned by them. The formats and lengths of the academic biographies vary, but they all reflect the author's research experience and inner journey, as well as their academic and personal style. The main part of each selected volume consists of the author's works from different periods. When negotiating the publication of the volumes with the authors, they were concerned that republishing previously published papers might be disrespectful to readers. However, we believe that when authors select their papers, they exercise their own prudent academic judgment. Through the authors' careful selection, combined with the insights conveyed in the academic biographies and the historical context, we gain a deeper understanding of the content and value of each paper in the volumes. At the end of each selected volume, we append a comprehensive bibliography of the author's academic achievements to date. This bibliography not only showcases the author's academic creativity but also, for attentive readers, reveals their keen insight and appropriate selection of academic topics. Of course, compiling a volume does not signify the end of an author's academic journey; rather, it marks a new beginning. The vitality of the Institute of Law lies in the continuous progress of its scholarly community. We hope that this series of volumes can continue to be compiled, allowing readers to continuously gain rich insights accumulated over time, learn more about the academic journeys of many scholars at the Institute of Law, and reflect on the future of Chinese law when closing the books.
