Features: The invention and creation of writing is a significant leap in the history of human civilization. Because only through writing can the exchange, dissemination, continuation, and development of human civilization and other achievements of invention and creation become possible. This is a common point shared by both China and the rest of the world. However, the ability to write to be considered an art, i.e., calligraphy, is a unique tradition of Chinese civilization. In the history of world art, no art can match the Chinese calligraphy in both having a broad social application foundation and possessing an elegant, elite cultural nature. Therefore, understanding the art of calligraphy becomes a necessary component in recognizing traditional Chinese civilization. In traditional artistic concepts, calligraphy, painting, and seal carving have long been mentioned together and have influenced each other, sharing many similarities in form. Thus, the writing of this book includes seal carving; whereas, content related to form and collection is not repeated here, as similar discussions have already been covered in the book Chinese Painting.
