Features: The digital age urgently needs a large number of professionals engaged in information system development. Such professionals must not only have a foundational knowledge in computer science, management science, and systems science but should also master the fundamental principles of information system design and development methods. They should be capable of advancing and deeply engaging in the practical activities of information system construction. The concepts, theories, content, technologies, and methods of information systems have expanded significantly. As educators, we have the responsibility and obligation to introduce these new developments to a broad range of students, which is one of the reasons for writing this book. This book is primarily aimed at undergraduate students majoring in management information systems in liberal arts colleges. The book is divided into nine chapters: The first three chapters mainly introduce some basic concepts and theories of management information systems, providing readers with a preliminary understanding. Chapter 1 gives a general introduction to the definition, classification, and composition of management information systems, as well as their development history. Chapter 2 focuses on a detailed analysis and comparison of several concepts closely related to management information systems (including data, information, systems, management, and decision-making). Chapter 3 emphasizes the technical foundations of management information systems, such as computer science, database technology, and computer network technology. Chapter 4 shifts to introducing knowledge related to the development of management information systems, highlighting the content of strategic planning, development principles, and several representative development methods. Following the process of management information system development, Chapters 5 to 8 sequentially introduce the knowledge of analysis, design, implementation, and management and evaluation of management information systems. The content includes surveying and analyzing existing systems, establishing the logical model of a new system; designing system codes, data structures, and database modules; the steps and precautions for system implementation; and how to manage and evaluate the system, etc. Through learning, readers will gain an understanding of the knowledge involved in the entire process of information system development. Finally, in Chapter 9, combined with the new advancements in management information system technology, it provides a general introduction and outlook on several future development trends, such as decision support systems, expert systems, and computer-integrated manufacturing systems.
