Features: The rapid development of information technology has led to the swift advancement of computer operating systems in recent years. The widespread adoption of network applications has driven people to shift from standalone to network-based applications, resulting in the networking of operating systems. The increasing demand for online application services and data processing has led to a surge in server requirements, necessitating a deeper understanding of server operating systems among more individuals. The growing need for information processing has led to an increase in the volume of services running on smart devices, ranging from information services, e-commerce, mobile communications to information appliances, thereby driving the demand for a large number of information devices. This has further led to the integration of various computers (including embedded computers) into these devices, which is the issue of ubiquitous computing. Ubiquitous computing requires various embedded operating systems, thus promoting the miniaturization of operating systems. The development of network technology, cluster technology, multiprocessor technology, and distributed computing has further deepened the evolution of operating systems. These new developments have posed several new requirements for the course "Operating Systems." Most people have limited exposure to UNIX-based operating systems. To excel in the course on operating systems and understand UNIX, it is essential to engage in extensive practice and repeated hands-on experience. The 10 experiments included with this book are the basic skills for working in a UNIX environment and serve only as an introductory guide. Readers are encouraged to refer to additional resources for further improvement. Although X Windows has become quite user-friendly since the release of Red Hat Linux 8.0 (up to version 9.0 when the preface was written), the authors still recommend using the character interface and command line for interaction, as our goal is to ensure compatibility with most UNIX servers. Despite the difficulty of memorizing UNIX commands, mastering some basic concepts and operations will enable you to navigate various systems efficiently. The main content of this book includes: Introduction to Operating Systems, Job Management, Processes, Processor Scheduling, Memory Management, Device Management, File Systems, Networks, Distributed Computing, Client/Server, and Clustering, along with 10 hands-on experiments. This book retains the classic theories of operating systems while striving for completeness and continuity in knowledge. It also incorporates essential modern aspects of operating systems, such as multiprocessor systems, distributed systems, networks, and security. The book emphasizes both theoretical and practical aspects, using the popular Linux operating system as an example. Theoretical concepts are validated through the analysis and application of the Linux operating system in relevant sections of the textbook. The appendix provides the content and steps for the hands-on experiments, making it easier for readers to follow. The content of this book is detailed and practical. It can serve as a textbook for computer science programs in vocational and technical colleges, as well as for related disciplines in other institutions, and is also a valuable reference for Linux enthusiasts.
