God in the mortal world

Features: This book collects thirteen essays by Mortimer published between 1989 and 1996. "God in the Modern World's Great Plan: A Contribution to the Public Relevance of Theology" clearly sets the tone of the book: theology loses its original identity if it does not engage with the public sphere, and the public sphere—especially the precarious modern society—needs theological reflection and critique. When the modern world was born, three benevolent gods brought their blessings. The first blessed individualistic freedom, the second blessed social justice, and the third blessed prosperity. But one night, an evil god came and said, "Of these three blessings, only two can be realized." Western modern society chose individualistic freedom and prosperity, while Eastern modern society chose social justice and prosperity. However, philosophers and theologians chose individualistic freedom and social justice for their ideal society, and thus could never attain prosperity.
