Features: This book, A Grand View of Chinese Architectural Culture, aims to explore major topics such as the cultural background, character, essential features, historical development, categories, and ethnic personalities of Chinese architecture from an anthropological perspective. It includes hundreds of illustrations, striving for a broad vision, fresh insights, abundant materials, vivid writing, and exquisite design. It delves into various aspects of Chinese culture at a high level and combines academic theory, appreciation and collection value, as well as the utility of an encyclopedia. The book is divided into four parts.
Part One discusses the spatiotemporal awareness, origin concepts, and the influence of Confucian, Taoist, and Buddhist traditional culture on Chinese architecture, as well as the materials, structures, techniques, spatial combinations, aesthetic characteristics, and the influence of "feng shui" culture. It presents a comprehensive view of the cosmology and literary philosophy of Chinese architectural culture.
Part Two briefly traces the historical development of Chinese architectural culture.
Part Three is divided into three sections, analyzing the cultural characteristics, connotations, and comparative studies between Chinese and Western architectural categories and individual components.
Section One primarily examines the cultural personalities of Chinese cities, palaces, temples, residential houses, mausoleums, monasteries and shrines, towers and halls, city walls and bridges, pavilions and corridors, gate towers, and memorial arches.
Section Two, the main section, focuses on the technical structures and artistic qualities of Chinese architectural roofs, roof frames, walls, doors and windows, roof tiles, brickwork, foundations, paving, and decorations.
Section Three compares the similarities and differences between Chinese and Western architectural cultures in terms of urban landscapes, palace forms, religious buildings, public buildings, residential houses, and mausoleums.
Part Four takes examples from over ten ethnic groups, such as the Tibetan, Uyghur, Mongolian, Hui, Dai, and Bai ethnicities, to briefly describe the unique charm of China's minority architectural cultures.
Interwoven throughout the four parts is an exploration of the historical forms, contemporary significance, and future trends of the spirit of Chinese architectural culture. As a unique form of land culture and land philosophy in the East, Chinese architectural culture belongs not only to the past but also to the future; it belongs not only to China but also to the world. As an academic and cultural endeavor, this book undoubtedly holds commendable value.
