The 20th century was a century of glorious achievements in science and technology, as well as a century of increasing human rationality. Many scientific and technological achievements of the 20th century have had a profound impact on human society and continue to exert strong driving forces for social development. Geography is no exception. The 20th Century Chinese Academic Compendium·Geography, edited by Academician Wu Chuanjun of the Institute of Geographic Resources as the chief editor, with Yang Qinye and Lu Qi as deputy editors, is a large-scale reference book in entry form, recently published by Fujian Education Press. Organized by discipline, it includes 7 categories of entries: disciplinary research, thematic research, academic events, academic figures, famous academic works, academic institutions and organizations, and academic journals, totaling 139 entries and approximately 600,000 words. It comprehensively summarizes the academic achievements of Chinese geography over the past century, serving as a unique "centennial chronicle" of geographical studies. Although not an academic work, it maintains a high academic standard; it respects history, advances the development of geography, and spreads knowledge. To avoid factional bias, it inclusively covers debates involving different schools of thought as long as they represent academic innovation. The opening chapter, 20th Century Chinese Geographical Research (authored by Wu Chuanjun, Liu Shengjia, and Yang Qinye), provides an overview of the development and progress of Chinese geography over the past century, covering aspects such as the influence of foreign modern geographers on Chinese geographical research, the contributions of Zhang Xiangwen and Zhu Kezhen to the development of Chinese geography, representative figures who promoted the growth of Chinese geography before 1949, the mainstream of modern Chinese geographical research, the development of the two major disciplines of modern Chinese geography, and the exploration of fundamental theories in geography. This book is an important reference for understanding the century-long journey of Chinese geography.
