Features: The selection of works in this book follows several basic principles: First, between the literary historical significance and literary quality of the works, more emphasis is placed on the literary quality. The so-called literary historical significance of a work refers to the influence it gains due to its special status in literary history. Second, when selecting works, attention is paid to the diversity of the novel's appearance. The works selected in this book are mainly realistic and romantic novels, in addition to some "avant-garde novels" that are included because of their influence from Western modernism or characterized by certain radical artistic experiments. Third, the selected works in this book are mainly short and medium-length stories. Considering the limited scope of this book, some longer medium-length and full-length novels can only be included in the form of "entries," but an excessive number of entries will inevitably reduce the length of the original novel text, so the selection of works in this book has had to compress the number of entries for medium and long-length novels.
