Features: This revised new book can be used as a textbook and self-study guide for intensive German courses, public German (i.e., a second foreign language) classes, and online teaching. The book emphasizes building a solid foundation in pronunciation, teaching essential and commonly used vocabulary, and focuses on grammar and basic oral language instruction as the main teaching threads, aiming to cultivate students' reading, translation, and basic oral language skills. Parts and of the book contain 33 lessons, with lessons 1-8 dedicated to the pronunciation stage, starting grammar instruction from lesson 9 until lesson 32. Lessons 15, 21, 27, and 33 are review lessons, each accompanied by a reading passage covering topics such as science and technology, folk tales, travel writing, and economics, while also reviewing previously learned grammar.
Part of the pronunciation tutorial consists of 8 lessons (16-20 hours of instruction). Students will learn all German pronunciation rules, phonetic rules, 143 vocabulary words, and simple dialogues. Part of the basic tutorial consists of 25 lessons (50-70 hours of instruction). Through these 25 lessons, students will master basic German grammar and 420 vocabulary words. Grammar instruction can be conducted comprehensively through grammar explanations, grammar pattern examples, texts, dialogues, and exercises, while dialogues can be taught through narrative texts, dialogue texts, and corresponding exercises. Exercises are divided into two parts: in-class assignments and homework. The exercise volume is slightly more than necessary, and teachers can select as needed based on specific circumstances.
Parts three and four of the book focus on reading, translation, and grammar, which belong to the same teaching stage (over 20 hours of instruction). The reading and translation texts consist of 17 lessons, from which teachers can select a portion. The grammar section provides an introduction to key and challenging points of German grammar, deepening the understanding of basic grammar, with a total of 15 units.
The book was originally designed for 100 hours of in-class instruction and 200 hours of self-study. With the added content, the teaching time should be appropriately extended.
