Itchy eyes with red fundus and tears, swollen eyes in the morning upon waking up

Patient's question:

Over the past two weeks, both eyes have been itchy with redness in the fundus and tearing. In the morning upon waking, there is swelling in both eyes accompanied by a blue-black discoloration.

Doctor's answer:

It could be conjunctivitis. Steroid eye drops (cortisone) can be used. For those with excessive secretions, the conjunctival sac should be flushed with normal saline, boric solution, or antibiotic solution several times a day, and then sulfonamide, antibiotic solution, or ointment should be applied or dropped, 4-6 times a day. Alternatively, 1% silver nitrate can be applied to the tarsal conjunctiva, followed by rinsing with normal saline, once a day.
