This dictionary is a medium-sized idiom dictionary, containing over 8,000 entries. The establishment of entries in this dictionary strives for standardization. Two approaches are adopted: First, entries are established in standardized written forms, with specific notes on occasional non-standard character or word usage. Second, entries are divided into main and subordinate entries—main entries are used for explanations, while subordinate entries introduce alternative forms with the phrase "also written as." This approach addresses the objective reality of numerous synonyms, near-synonyms, and variant forms in Chinese idioms, enhancing the scientific and practicality of the dictionary's word selection and entry establishment. It helps readers gain a comprehensive understanding of the complex and overall nature of Chinese idioms.
The definitions in this dictionary are concise, accurate, and easy to understand, with a strong focus. The explanation methods are flexible and not confined to a single form. The content is rich and the materials are well-documented. Before compilation, extensive preparatory work was done, collecting over 100,000 reference cards. We utilized ancient materials to explore the origins of idioms and modern, contemporary, and contemporary textual evidence to trace their evolution. Except for a few entries, the dictionary generally provides textual evidence for each entry, reflecting the meaning, usage, and temporal context of the idioms.
