Laozi's philosophy can be considered "feminine philosophy," filled with a gentle spirit, paying great attention to the soft and weak aspects. This has had a profound influence on the later emergence of Taoism. Laozi teaches that one should be like water in life. In society, one should choose to do humble things, not seeking fame or glory, as even the most glorious is illusory, temporary, and untrue. All actions that seek fame and profit are laughable, merely for the sake of standing out, and ultimately lead to failure. The way of life Laozi advocates is "remaining undisturbed by fame or disgrace." Later Chinese people were influenced by this, even believing that "one should fear their name being known by others." In Laozi's view, people's minds should also be like the vast and profound ocean, deep and broad, capable of containing all things in the lowest, flattest, and calmest places.
