In 2021, a computer file containing not only a major impact on the future of humanity but also the secret cure for a century-old incurable disease was implanted into Johnny's brain. A global-dominating multinational company wants to seize this software data, sending "killers" to follow Johnny relentlessly, waiting for the right moment to strike. With no one to rely on, Johnny has no choice but to flee. On the run, he meets a former bodyguard named Jane, through whom Johnny finally finds a "doctor" who can unlock the secrets in his brain and benefit humanity.
Screenwriter William Gibson had already written a short story about this tale in the early 1980s, primarily exploring the relationship between the human brain and computers. During this time, several film producers requested adaptations of the script. In the end, the decision was made to direct it by Robert Longo, an artist and sculptor. To save costs, most of the exterior shots were filmed in Toronto.
