The Legend of the Four Gentlemen of Jiangnan is renowned for their romantic and unorthodox charm, but in this classic film, it seems quite different: The scholars' lustful behavior is nothing new, and even performing fashion shows by stripping in public is part of their antics—such crudeness is unmatched worldwide. Tang Bohu is highly skilled in martial arts and exceptionally talented, captivating countless women. Eight of Tang's cousins all want to marry him, but these women are only good at playing mahjong, guessing hands, and drinking, causing Tang Bohu immense distress. By chance, Tang Bohu meets Qiu Xiang, a maid from the Minister's house. Qiu Xiang is beautiful and kind, making Tang Bohu utterly smitten. To win her favor, Tang Bohu hides his identity, sells himself into servitude, and arrives at the Minister's house. Unbeknownst to him, the Minister's wife holds a deep grudge against his father, so Tang cannot reveal himself. Another of the Minister's enemies comes to attack, but at the critical moment, Tang bravely steps forward and defeats the adversary. However, at this very moment, the Minister's wife recognizes Tang as her father's enemy through his martial arts skills and raises her sword to strike. After a series of twists and turns, Tang finally wins the heart of the beautiful Qiu Xiang and elopes with her far away.
This film is adapted from the folk legend of Tang Bohu selling himself into servitude, featuring an exciting story alongside the comedic masterpiece Stephen Chow and mainland actress Gong Li in the leading roles. The romantic love story between the scholar and beauty is even more captivating.
