"Of the 'worldly novels,' The Golden Lotus is the most famous."
"Reading The Golden Lotus is nothing more than describing worldly affairs, revealing all their truth and falsehood."
"Yet it also contains hidden subtleties, with many allusions and jokes. Later, some authors might focus on this aspect while neglecting other works, leading to the pejorative term 'book of lust.' However, at the time, it was indeed fashionable."
"Yet the author of The Golden Lotus was skilled in writing, so although it contains some vulgar terms, its other merits are undeniable."
Lu Xun reviewed The Golden Lotus:
"The Golden Lotus did not spread widely not only because of its obscenity but mainly because it exposed only the darkness."
"The Golden Lotus is the ancestor of Dream of the Red Chamber. Without The Golden Lotus, Dream of the Red Chamber could not have been written."
