Features: To meet the societal demand for art education textbooks and cultivate 21st-century talents, our press, in line with the spirit of the "National School Art Education Master Plan," has specially invited professional art teachers from Shanghai University of Fine Arts, Shanghai Xingzhi University of Arts, and East China Normal University to compile and illustrate the "Basic Art Step-by-Step Training Textbook" series. The aim is to develop students' visual abilities, artistic aesthetic skills, and innovative spirit through painting technique training. This series is comprehensive, rich in illustrations, easy to understand, and can serve as both professional and amateur art training materials or reference books. Whether for beginners or those with some painting experience, it offers practical guidance.
Sketching training is one of the important ways to deepen our understanding of objective things. It allows us to move beyond the superficial impressions of objective objects and delve into the study of their internal structural essence. Sketching training not only involves learning how to represent the form relationships of objective objects but also how to enhance our perception, judgment, and understanding of these objects through representation, thereby improving our aesthetic level. For beginners, it requires a longer practical process—only through repeated experience and reflection can one grasp the true meaning of sketching as a form of artistic expression.
Literally speaking, sketching refers to depicting objects in monochrome, but its substantive is richer and broader. It involves presenting the various visual patterns of objects within the field of vision through certain means. In sketching training, learning about observation methods, structural combinations, compositional principles, perspective phenomena, layering perception, and expressive techniques should proceed step by step, allowing for continuous updates in understanding. Therefore, throughout the learning process, once the basics of sketching are mastered, one should be adept at appreciating the various changes in objects, allowing the depicted subject to reflect the true essence of art through the use of lines that are thick and thin, coarse and fine, rigid and soft.
The forms of sketching include: pen sketching, charcoal sketching, pencil sketching, and ink brush sketching, among which pencil sketching and charcoal sketching are the most common. This is because their drawing tools are simple, their expressive power is strong, and they are easy to master, making them particularly suitable for beginners.
