It is like a rich and brilliant cultural treasure trove, providing wisdom and strength to future generations. The Four Great Classical Novels of Chinese Literature are the crystallization of the wisdom of the Chinese nation and the gems of Chinese literary history. For centuries, they have been beloved by the masses, becoming household names and timeless classics that have profoundly influenced Chinese culture. Romance of the Three Kingdoms, also known as Romance of the Three Kingdoms or Romance of the Three Kingdoms and Heroes, is a monumental work. The author, Luo Guanzhong, was a novelist of the late Yuan and early Ming dynasties, styled Ben, and known by the courtesy name Guanzhong. He was born in Hangzhou and traced his ancestry to Taiyuan. This book is one of the most accomplished historical novels in ancient Chinese literature. It was created by Luo Guanzhong based on extensive historical records, anecdotes, and folk tales about the Three Kingdoms period. It was refined and enriched on the foundation of folk arts such as opera and storytelling. Luo Guanzhong drew nourishment from popular art while also researching historical facts, organizing the chaotic history of the Three Kingdoms chronologically, by events, and by characters into this grand masterpiece. The content of Romance of the Three Kingdoms depicts nearly a century of history from the middle year of Emperor Ling of the Eastern Han Dynasty (184 AD) to the first year of Emperor Taikang of the Western Jin Dynasty (280 AD). The book begins by describing the crisis caused by the incompetence and corruption of the ruling class in the late Eastern Han Dynasty, leading to widespread suffering among the people and numerous uprisings, culminating in the massive peasant rebellion led by Zhang Jiao. It then details how Dong Zhuo's cruelty provoked the of other warlords, who united to oppose him. Dong Zhuo was slain, and Cao Cao came to power, holding the emperor hostage to command the warlords and suppressing resistance in the north before advancing into the south. Sun Quan and Liu Bei formed an alliance to resist Cao Cao, defeating him in the Battle of Red Cliffs and establishing the Tripartite. From then on, the three states of Wei, Shu, and Wu engaged in wars with varying victories and defeats. Eventually, the Western Jin Dynasty conquered Shu, defeated Wei, and, restoring unity. This small book condenses the grand masterpiece, with over a million words, into a mere, extracting its essence while preserving the original style—a task far from easy. The Color Illustrations with Pinyin edition of Romance of the Three Kingdoms is even more vivid and easier for young children learning to read to grasp the story's content.
