Wan Zhi was one of the earliest novelists of "Today" in the early 1980s, alongside Shi Tiesheng and Liu Zili, who were collectively known as the "Three Great Novelists of Today." The personalities of these three were all eccentric and independent, with Shi Tiesheng being more introspective and self-reflective, Liu Zili leaning toward the mystical and ethereal, while Wan Zhi's works bore the imprint of Hegel's spiritual history. At that time, their starting point far surpassed and was beginning to diverge from their contemporaries. The "Today" movement later created a huge wave in poetry, with its echoes still resonating today. The novels of "Today" did not form a distinct school, perhaps due to the of history, or perhaps because fiction is inherently a more personal endeavor.
