This book is written based on the lecture notes of the author while teaching "Camera and Photographic Optics" at the School of Photography, Beijing Film Academy. The content related to photographic optics and lenses will be published separately in this series of textbooks. Since the early 1990s, when the author hosted the "Reader Mailbox" in the China Photography newspaper and taught camera courses at the Beijing Hongqi "Vocational College" photography class, he has encountered a large number of amateur photographers and photography students. He deeply feels that with the improvement of people's living standards, the equipment used by photographers in China is gradually aligning with international standards, but the level of equipment usage is still far behind that of foreign photographers. Especially in recent years, the "weapon worship" mentality has been on the rise, causing many working-class photographers to blindly purchase high-end equipment, only to fall into various misconceptions during use, resulting in poor technical quality in their photos even with professional cameras. The author hopes this book will help improve the camera usage skills of intermediate and advanced photographers. The book the cumbersome content about camera structure and is organized by camera functions, focusing on explaining the basic knowledge and techniques of using cameras. Each chapter is structured in the following order: Classification (the different structures or functional types of each system in the camera, their advantages and disadvantages, and their various uses); Technical Specifications and Tiers (enabling readers to judge the camera's tier by reading promotional materials and test articles in the future); Equipment Usage (in-depth discussion of precautions and techniques for using equipment). This book primarily focuses on camera usage and selection, while also covering common knowledge about flashguns and other accessories. There are numerous review questions at the end of each chapter, selected from the author's accumulated question bank over the years. Before studying each chapter, readers can fill in the blanks with answers to test their existing knowledge level and enhance their reading interest. After completing the corresponding chapters, readers can solve the fill-in-the-blank questions again to assess their learning effectiveness. Any incorrect answers indicate that the relevant knowledge has not been mastered, and readers must revisit the related content. The book contains many tables, some of which summarize the main text (e.g., Table 2-1, Table 2-2), which can serve as review outlines for readers. Carefully studying these tables and answering the questions by covering the column headings can help readers grasp the key knowledge about equipment characteristics. Another type of table supplements the text (e.g., Table 1-1, Table 1-2) and can be referenced by readers during actual use. Bold characters or graphics in parentheses are common camera symbols, and remembering their meanings and functions can significantly improve readers' ability to use new cameras. This book is primarily intended for undergraduate photography courses but can also be used for junior and senior photography programs. Teachers only need to lecture on one-third of the more important or challenging content, while the rest can be self-studied by students.
