How is it that sucking one's fingers for eight and a half months?

Patient's question:

Doctor, my child is eight and a half months old. He always likes to put his right thumb in his mouth to suck, and he has to suck it when sleeping. I can't force him to stop. Someone told me that as the child grows, it will naturally get better. Is this true? I'm mainly worried that his finger might develop some problem from sucking. Also, I'm afraid of dental issues because he already has three teeth on the top, which are very sparse. I hope the doctor can give me some guidance on this. Thank you.

Doctor's answer:

Teething in children. Itchy. Suggest eating more biscuits and croutons. The bad habit should be dropped. It is not good for tooth growth.
