Patient's question:
The neighbor's child has strabismus. Why do eyes turn?Doctor's answer:
Strabismus is generally caused by the following factors:1. Dysregulation of the ocular motor control center: This often manifests as convergent strabismus.
2. Underdeveloped visual function: The binocular vision function has not matured sufficiently, leading to poor coordination of the extraocular muscles. Children are particularly prone to strabismus before the age of 5.
3. Immature refractive system: Children are often farsighted, and due to their strong accommodative ability, excessive accommodation can cause excessive convergence of both eyes, easily leading to esotropia.
4. Congenital abnormalities: Abnormal anatomical positioning or development of the extraocular muscles, or paralysis of the nerves that control them, can cause strabismus. In medicine, strabismus occurring within the first 6 months of life is referred to as congenital strabismus.
