Why do ears leak?

Patient's question:

No

Doctor's answer:

There are two types of otitis media: one is purulent otitis media, commonly known as "ear drum trouble." This is a purulent infection of the middle ear cavity, usually caused by a cold. It is more common in children, with initial ear pain being prominent, characterized as a (swelling pain), and may include fever. Once the eardrum perforates and discharges pus, the pain subsides. The other type is non-purulent otitis media. This type of otitis media does not discharge pus, but rather causes a feeling of fullness in the ear, hearing loss, or tinnitus. This is due to inflammation of the eustachian tube, which leads to pressure changes in the middle ear cavity.
The treatment for purulent otitis media includes: if possible, culturing the pus and conducting sensitivity tests to select appropriate antibiotics, which can be administered orally or via injection. For the ear itself: if the discharge is large and thick, hydrogen peroxide is used for cleaning, followed by the application of sensitive antibiotic ear drops. If it is non-purulent otitis media, the main focus is to reduce edema in the eustachian tube. Nasal drops, anti-inflammatory medications, and appropriate use of antibiotics are applied.
