Can children's epilepsy be completely cured?

Patient's question:

Child is 8 years old. Epilepsy was diagnosed at 7. It has been controlled with medication. Had a spinal cord implant surgery last year and another one this year. Condition has improved. Has been taking medication since diagnosis without stopping. Had three episodes last year and two this year. Is there any way to completely cure it?

Doctor's answer:

Treatment of Epilepsy with Medication: What are the newer methods for treating pediatric epilepsy? Treatment of epilepsy with medication is a complex, unpredictable, and common chronic neurological disease with various etiologies and clinical manifestations. The goal of treatment is to control or minimize seizures, eliminate the underlying cause, and reduce brain damage. Standardized medication can lead to remission in 70% to 80% of patients within 5 years, with 50% being able to completely stop medication. Among patients with refractory epilepsy who do not respond to medication, a portion can be cured through surgery.
