A 6-month-old child has been constantly tearing from the left eye, and it gets particularly severe when exposed to wind.

Patient's question:

Detailed medical condition and consultation purpose: The left eye has been watering without any reason, and it gets much worse when exposed to wind. The purpose is to ask what this condition is and how it should be treated.
Duration and persistence of the current illness: It has been going on for about two and a half months.
Medical history: None
Current general condition: The corners of the eyes are always wet with tears.

Doctor's answer:

Hello, it could be dacryocystitis.
If diagnosed with neonatal dacryocystitis, don’t panic and don’t rush into surgery. Most infants’ lacrimal ducts are still in the stage of continuous development within the first six months, so conservative treatment should be adopted first. After a period of treatment, apply antibiotic eye drops locally and massage the lacrimal sac area 2 to 3 times a day. Over time, the membrane will rupture on its own, and the lacrimal duct will become unobstructed.
If the lacrimal duct remains blocked after some time, you can go to the hospital for lacrimal duct irrigation to break the membrane. If that doesn’t work, lacrimal duct probing can be performed, where a probe is used to pierce the membrane and restore the lacrimal duct to normal function.
