Why are the ALT and AST levels high in a four-month-old baby?

Patient's question:

Why are the ALT and AST levels high in a four-month-old baby? How should it be

Doctor's answer:

Don't hurry, it doesn't necessarily mean liver disease, because when the baby is born, due to the large destruction of red blood cells and the liver enzyme system not being fully developed, physiological jaundice may occur. Alanine aminotransferase (ALT) levels are generally twice as high as those of adults and only decrease to a level similar to adults by the age of 5 to 12 months. Therefore, a high level of aspartate aminotransferase (AST) in babies does not necessarily indicate liver disease.
