Patient's question:
My baby is one month old, and we are doing a mix of breastfeeding and formula feeding, with the formula being Similac Gold. Baby weighed 6.9 pounds at birth and now weighs 9.1 pounds. The baby is in great spirits and often keeps their big eyes open, refusing to sleep. During the day, they need to be held to sleep, and once they fall asleep, they cry after being put down for just 5 minutes. At night, they often hum and need to be coaxed to sleep. This way, their total sleep time adds up to around 10 hours a day.Baby's bowel movements are also irregular, sometimes having 3-4 bowel movements a day with small amounts each time, and other times only having 1-2 bowel movements every 1-2 days, but with large amounts each time. The stool is yellow or green and has a paste-like consistency.
Is all of this normal?
Doctor's answer:
Hello! A baby's daily sleep time should be around 16-20 hours. If the baby often sleeps restlessly, it's important to consider whether there is a hunger issue. Additionally, the warmth or coolness of the bedding, as well as the quality of the sleeping environment, also play a significant role.Generally, one month after birth, fish oil can be started to supplement the baby's diet. It can correct and prevent symptoms caused by a lack of vitamin D, such as night sweats, sleeplessness, bald spots on the head, and poor appetite.
If breast milk is insufficient, it should be supplemented with formula milk. If the baby drinks more milk, the stool may appear looser and more frequent. Conversely, the stool will be drier and less frequent, but the color is normal.
