A dictionary is an important tool for learning English. Although we use various Chinese-English and English-Chinese dictionaries to learn English, the sentences we learn are not often used by Americans. Many sentences in dictionaries are grammatically correct, but Americans may find them confusing (surprising, right?). I have often been asked whether I could write a practical English dictionary that reflects the expressions used by contemporary Americans in everyday conversations. Many people have also suggested publishing a dictionary with short sentences for easy conversation. Motivated by these voices, I decided to compile this book.
For many years, I have been a lecturer for the NHK TV program "Pocket English Conversation – Learn and Use on the Go." It is a very popular program. This book was planned and written from the same perspective as the program's (teaching materials). In other words, this dictionary collects spoken expressions used by contemporary Americans that are clearly meaningful. New words and expressions appear in the U.S. almost every day. Although Chinese also changes, the evolution of spoken English expressions is particularly significant. This book focuses on "modern American expressions frequently used today" and selects various spoken short sentences. Multiple American-born individuals have carefully confirmed each sentence, and professors from the University of California, Irvine, also participated in this confirmation.
As mentioned earlier, many dictionaries often list uncommon and obscure example sentences. However, this dictionary mainly includes simple, common basic expressions, so readers can effectively learn truly practical English expressions.
