The Records of the Grand Historian is the crystallization of Sima Qian's life. It took about 15 years to compile, and if the preparation of materials is included, it took over 20 years. The history recorded in The Records of the Grand Historian starts from the legendary Yellow Emperor and ends in the Taichu period of Emperor Wu of the Han Dynasty, covering approximately 3,000 years. Its style is the annals of biographies, primarily organized by individuals or families, with strong narrative elements, outstanding writing, and serving as a pioneer and model for later generations of biographical literature, exerting profound influence. In terms of thought, due to his personal experiences, Sima Qian's reflections on "humanity" surpassed his time, truly achieving a "human-centered" perspective, which was rare. The Records of the Grand Historian has been annotated since the Eastern Han Dynasty. The earliest complete ancient annotations include three: Pei Yin's Comprehensive Explanations of the Records of the Grand Historian (Southern Song Dynasty), Sima Zhen's Hidden Meanings of the Records of the Grand Historian (Tang Dynasty), and Zhang Shujie's Correct Meanings of the Records of the Grand Historian (Tang Dynasty). The principles and research of The Records of the Grand Historian have been an important topic for scholars throughout the generations. In the modern era, Zhang Wenhu made significant contributions to the organization of The Records of the Grand Historian, and Takizawa Kazumichi's Comprehensive Annotations and Examinations of the Records of the Grand Historian also holds considerable importance. Liang Yusheng's Doubts on the Records of the Grand Historian (Qing Dynasty) and Chen Zhi's New Evidence of the Records of the Grand Historian (modern era) are also significant research works. This book primarily covers the following sections: Basic Annals of the Five Emperors, Basic Annals of Xia (Second), Basic Annals of Yin (Third), Basic Annals of Zhou (Fourth), Basic Annals of Qin (Fifth), Basic Annals of Qin Shi Huang (Sixth), Basic Annals of Xiang Yu (Seventh), Basic Annals of Emperor Gaozu (Eighth), Basic Annals of Empress Lü (Ninth), Basic Annals of Emperor Wen (Tenth), Basic Annals of Emperor Jing (Eleventh), Basic Annals of Emperor Wu (Twelfth), Genealogical Tables of the Three Dynasties (Twelfth), Genealogical Tables of the Twelve States (Second), Genealogical Tables of the Six Kingdoms (Third), Genealogical Tables of the Month in the Era of Qin and Chu (Fourth), Genealogical Tables of States since the Rise of Han (Fifth), Genealogical Tables of Meritorious Marquises since Emperor Gaozu (Sixth), Genealogical Tables of States between Emperor Hui and Emperor Jing (Seventh), Genealogical Tables of States since the Era of Jianyuan (Eighth), Genealogical Tables of Princes since the Era of Jianyuan (Ninth), Genealogical Tables of Ministers and Officials since the Rise of Han (Tenth), Book of Rites, Book of Music (Second), Book of Laws (Third), Book of Calendars (Fourth), Book of Celestial Observations (Fifth), Book of Imperial Sacrifices (Sixth), Book of River and Canal Systems (Seventh), Book of Equalizing the Market (Eighth), Basic Annals of Wu Taibai (Basic Annals of Wu Taibai (Second), Basic Annals of Qi Taigong (Second), Basic Annals of Lu Zhou Gong (Third), Basic Annals of Yan Zhao Gong (Fourth), Basic Annals of Guan and Cai (Fifth), Basic Annals of Chen and Qi (Sixth), Basic Annals of Wei Kangshu (Seventh), etc.
