"Zhinan" is a collection of short stories compiled by Feng Menglong, a famous litterateur of the Ming Dynasty in China. The book collects over a thousand short stories of ancient people using wisdom to solve difficulties. These stories not only reflect the grand strategies of emperors, generals, scholars, and famous literati in politics, military, and diplomacy but also the small cleverness of common people such as soldiers, women, servants, monks, and farmers in their daily lives. In the preface to "Zhinan," Feng Menglong explicitly states the purpose of compiling the book: "A person with wisdom is like water to the land. Without water, the land becomes a desert; without wisdom, a person becomes a walking corpse. Wisdom, when applied to people, is like water flowing through the land. Where the land is low, water fills it; where human affairs are low, wisdom fills it. Looking at the successes and failures of the past, nothing is achieved without this." It is clear that Feng Menglong intended to emphasize the importance of acquiring wisdom. His writing is concise yet profound, making people think deeply. "Zhinan" indeed holds certain social value in the development of the Chinese nation. "Zhinan" belongs to classical Chinese note literature, which is characterized by processing and organizing existing materials according to a specific topic, re-editing them, dividing them into categories, and annotating and criticizing them. Its emergence was a result of social demand. However, they lacked the leisure time and conditions to extensively search for ancient texts, so books discussing history and wisdom, as well as various thematic note collections, came into being. Among these themes, those about "wisdom" were particularly popular. After Feng Menglong's "Zhinan" was published, readers required additional printings and continuations, which illustrates this point. The book is a masterpiece worthy of appreciation and collection, deeply loved by famous scholars and scholars. Mao Zedong, despite his busy schedule, read "Zhinan" and left many annotations and notes on it, showing his high regard and admiration for the book. In conclusion, this is a record that enlightens wisdom, and after reading it, one's ability to adapt can be enhanced. Even from the perspective of literary appreciation, knowledge acquisition, and ideological education, "Zhinan" still has the necessity to be introduced to a broad readership today.
