What causes frequent urination in babies? How to handle it?

Patient's question:

My child is just over two years old. Recently, he has been experiencing frequent urination every night. After changing his diaper, it doesn't take long before he needs another change. This happens two or three times every night. However, he doesn't drink much milk or water, and we are all worried about his health.
What kind of help do you need: What could be causing the baby's frequent urination?

Doctor's answer:

Frequent urination in children is very common. There are many causes of frequent urination, but they can be divided into two major categories: pathological (caused by diseases) and physiological. Pathological frequent urination may be due to infections, stones, tumors, or the presence of foreign bodies, with urinary tract infections being the most common. After a child develops a urinary tract infection, the amount of urine each time is not large, but the frequency of urination significantly increases, and symptoms such as urgency and dysuria may also occur. Physiological frequent urination, in addition to lifestyle factors such as excessive fluid intake, cold weather, and ill-fitting pants, is most commonly related to psychological frequent urination. Once you notice that your child is urinating frequently, it's important to investigate the cause—neither should you anxiously ask the child about this and that, nor should you alarmingly ask everyone about various ailments, to avoid frightening the child about urination.
