What causes children to always cough?

Patient's question:

My daughter is six years old. Since the end of 2008, she has been coughing frequently. Sometimes it's dry cough, and sometimes it's cough with a cold. She coughs both day and night.
Treatment history and effectiveness: She had a chest X-ray at the hospital and was mainly treated with medication and syrup. There was no significant improvement. When the cold was gone, the cough didn't go away. The cough always lingered and would recur intermittently.
What kind of help do you need: Please give some advice. The child is in a developmental stage, and this is not good for her health. What should I do?

Doctor's answer:

The symptoms you mentioned are allergic cough, also known as cough-variant asthma. Some people may experience sore throat and a persistent urge to cough, while others may have symptoms like belching or runny nose. It is related to an allergic constitution, and anti-inflammatory and cough-relieving medications alone are often not effective. During recurrence, oral loratadine or ketotifen, or Pulmicort throat spray can be taken. In the long term, oral traditional Chinese medicine Liuwei Dihuang Wan (3-6 months) can be used to enhance immunity, stabilize the allergic constitution, and reduce recurrence or self-healing.
