Features: Basic English Course (Volumes 1 and 2) is a professional textbook designed for the learning characteristics of first- and second-year students in English majors at institutions of higher learning, in accordance with the Teaching Syllabus for English Majors in Higher Education promulgated by the Ministry of Education in April 2000. The main features of this textbook include:
1. It breaks away from the limitations and drawbacks of traditional "cramming" teaching methods in English reading courses, emphasizing the cultivation of students' independent learning and research abilities. The student workbook of this textbook does not include a vocabulary list, as years of teaching experience have shown that students can only deepen their understanding of vocabulary and content by actively consulting dictionaries. To help students identify and think about problems while studying the texts, we divide each Text A into left and right columns. The right column serves as key points for self-study and classroom discussion, as well as providing space for students to take notes. This layout fully reflects the student-centered teaching philosophy, enabling students to develop independent reading, comprehension, learning, and thinking skills. In the accompanying teacher's manual, we provide detailed teaching guidance to reduce the burden on teachers during preparation and expand classroom content.
2. The textbook features a wide and fresh selection of materials. Text A is primarily selected from renowned works, while Text B consists of articles related to Text A's theme but with different styles, perspectives, or a contemporary touch. This allows students to learn classic English masterpieces, stay connected with modern trends, gain insights and knowledge on related topics, and develop the ability to think and analyze independently through comparisons of different styles and viewpoints.
3. The post-text exercises in this textbook are divided into in-class and out-of-class activities, which is another innovation. English learning is a comprehensive improvement of listening, speaking, reading, writing, and translation skills. Basic English is one of the foundational courses for English majors, where students not only practice new language points related to the texts but also review and consolidate their existing language foundation while broadening their knowledge. Students and teachers can flexibly adjust the amount of exercises based on actual language learning needs. During the trial use of this textbook, feedback from instructors and students was incorporated, and further improvements and refinements were made to the layout design. We hope to present students and teachers with a textbook in a completely new style.
