How to handle fever and convulsions in two or three-month-old infants

Patient's question:

A child with a fever and convulsions, this is the second time. I want to know how to treat it.

Doctor's answer:

Analysis of the Condition: Hello, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) believes that the occurrence of high fever convulsions in children is caused by excessive heat pathogens stirring up liver wind. Therefore, after the fever subsides and the wind calms down, TCM should further treat with methods such as sedation and extinguishing wind to clear the liver fire, extinguish the liver wind, restore the normal function of the viscera, and prevent convulsions from recurring.
Recommendations: TCM should tailor post-convulsion conditioning to the specific constitution of each child and the different causes of high fever convulsions, using different conditioning methods. Generally, commonly used sedative and wind-extinguishing herbs include: honeysuckle, cicada slough, pearl mother, raw oyster shell, dried silkworm pupa, earthworm, safflower, white peony root, and roasted sour jujube seeds, etc. Additionally, after high fever in children, yin fluids are often damaged, so it is advisable to replenish yin fluids accordingly. Commonly used yin-replenishing herbs include: raw rehmannia, sandalwood root, ophiopogon, asparagus root, and radix trichosanthis, etc.
