Features: The practice of orthodontic treatment in our country has not been carried out for a long time, initially only conducted in a few dental teaching institutions. In recent years, due to the stability of people's lives and the popularization of oral hygiene knowledge, parents have gradually paid attention to the oral condition of their children, leading to an increasing number of patients seeking orthodontic treatment. However, due to the limited number of doctors proficient in this field, there is currently a situation where the needs of patients are not fully met. Major hospitals have the idea of establishing orthodontic departments, but training an orthodontist requires a certain amount of time. Currently, in addition to the limited number of textbooks, there is still a lack of reference materials. It would be a beneficial move for those with vision to translate some foreign specialized books as "stones from other mountains" to promote the development of orthodontics in our country. The book "Orthodontic Appliance Atlas" translated by Dr. Yao Sen is timely and I hope readers can benefit from it. If so, it will not disappoint the original author and the translator. If it can further inspire the gradual development of a set of theories, appliances, and treatment methods suitable for our country, it will be even more beneficial! The Chinese translation of this book was first published in 1991. Over ten years ago, there were relatively few reference books in the field of orthodontics in China. After the publication of the Chinese translation, it received widespread praise from orthodontic professionals. The first edition of 5,000 copies was quickly sold out, followed by multiple reprints. After I returned from abroad in 1994, at the request of the World Publishing Company and many orthodontic colleagues, I revised the Chinese translation. According to the author's suggestions, all the illustrations were completely redrawn. The revised edition was highly praised by everyone and has been reprinted several times, maintaining a high circulation. Although both the Chinese edition and the revised edition are rich in content and visually appealing, they were all printed in black and white. Beginners found it somewhat difficult to understand the structure of the appliances shown in the monochrome line drawings. Additionally, some parts of the Chinese translation still needed revision or annotations. In 1997, Professor Dandi visited China and proposed that at the right time, the black and white line drawings of the book be colored and published in color. In 1998, when I visited Florence, Italy, Professor Dandi expressed this wish again. The rapid development of computer technology has provided the necessary means for the artistic processing of the book's illustrations. Doctors Xu Guoding, Wang Xiaohua, Lin Lianfang, and Ye Huifen have been engaged in orthodontic medical work for many years. During their professional training in orthodontics, in addition to completing the basic skills training, they used their spare time to learn computer operation under my guidance and spent a lot of time assisting me in coloring the line drawings and proofreading the text, which is commendable. The field of orthodontics in China has already gone through over 50 years, and it has developed rapidly in the past decade. I am very happy that the publication of "Orthodontic Appliance Atlas -- Structure, Principles, and Applications" has contributed a small part to the development of orthodontics. I also look forward to the publication of "Orthodontic Appliance Color Atlas -- The Secret to Scientifically Selecting and Using Appliances" becoming a valuable reference for colleagues. The publication of the color edition was greatly supported by the original author, Professor Dandi, the text reviewers, Professor Lin Zhu, and Professor Duan Yinzhong, as well as the Xi'an Branch of the World Publishing Company. The leaders of the Stomatological College of the Fourth Military Medical University, the Health Department of the Nanjing Military Region Joint Logistics Department, the 18th Branch of the Joint Logistics Department, and the Nanjing Military Region 74 Hospital also provided significant assistance. I am grateful for this support. Due to limited expertise, it is inevitable that there are shortcomings and errors in the book. I hope that the pioneers and colleagues in the field of orthodontics will kindly point them out. Yao Sen October 2002, Xiamen Special Economic Zone
