Features: The 20th century has passed, and looking back, a century of history flows like a mighty river. Over 2,000 years ago, Confucius sighed, "Time passes like this!" Su Shi of the Song Dynasty sang, "The great river flows eastward, washing away the legendary figures of ages!" And Mao Zedong of this century said, "How magnificent this land is, drawing countless heroes to its knees!" Nothing is more captivating than the story of human history. Historical tales are always fascinating, and when people savor the past, they often wish to be there in person, to witness the legendary figures and the authentic scenes of famous historical events. Only the history of the 20th century is a complete "visible" history. Countless renowned or unknown photographers, witnessing history firsthand, captured the scenes and figures with their lenses. These historical photographs have been passed down as fragments of eyewitness accounts. They have multiplied, with many becoming widely circulated and deeply imprinted in our minds. They have become unshakable representations of individuals, events, or eras, while many remain rare or seldom seen. Yet, as witnesses to history, they hold undeniable value as historical records. These fragments of eyewitness accounts are more vivid and compelling than any memories, legends, or written narratives, leaving us little need to imagine the scenes through words. It is precisely because the history of China in the 20th century has been recorded in frames of eyewitness fragments that the history of this century transcends time and space, allowing us and generations to come to witness the historical process through these photographs. Over 100 years, countless fragments have gathered to form a vast historical river, flowing before our eyes and the eyes of countless future generations. Thus, we see the events and figures we wish to see, and we witness the lives of ordinary people and the thrilling scenes of history. Though separated by time and space, there is no distance between us and history. In compiling this visual history of 20th-century China, we have carefully selected hundreds of such fragments. Due to space limitations, we can only choose a limited number of eyewitness points to showcase the history of this century, focusing primarily on selecting images of major events and important figures to allow readers to follow the historical narrative and behold its magnificent panorama. Additionally, we have included textual introductions to describe the development of historical events, providing a basic overview of 20th-century Chinese history. Over time, the excavation of historical photographs will accumulate gradually, expanding our vision of witnessing history. We believe that through the collective efforts of many, the history of China in this 100-year period will become increasingly complete before our eyes, becoming a rich and profound living landscape that everyone can witness. History is irreversible, but a history that allows future generations to witness it will forever live on. As it flows swiftly, each wave it creates remains forever in the form of eyewitness fragments, allowing later generations to immerse themselves endlessly in witnessing history.
