Ren Yi (1840–1896), styled Bo Nian, was also known as Xiao Lou and Bao Yin. He was from Shan Yin, Zhejiang. He was a disciple of Ren Xiong and Ren Xun. From middle age, he resided in Shanghai and sold paintings.
Ren Yi excelled in portraiture, with delicate line work and light coloring, achieving a spiritual essence with minimal brushwork. His depictions of birds, flowers, and animals were particularly lifelike, with his white-line drawings resembling Chen Laolin's style. Occasionally, he painted landscapes, with unique compositions and unrestrained brushwork, creating a vast and dynamic atmosphere. He also imitated the meticulous and powerful double-line drawings of the Song Dynasty. Before reaching adulthood, he was already renowned across the Jiangnan region. His calligraphy also incorporated artistic elements, being exceptionally bold and striking.
