Features: Professor Yan Zonglin is a renowned senior scholar in the field of world history. He studied abroad in Switzerland in his early years and devoted himself to the history of interactions between Western missionaries and China. Few Chinese scholars have followed this path, making Professor Yan's achievements exceptional and highly respected by the academic community. This book compiles papers published by Professor Yan between 1936 and 1943 on the topic of missionaries and cultural exchange between China and the West. The content of these papers can be broadly divided into three parts: The first part focuses on missionaries and early French Sinology, as well as China's influence on France in the 18th century. The second part examines the activities of missionaries during the early Qing Dynasty under the reigns of Kangxi, Yongzheng, and Qianlong, as well as the relationship between the Qing court and the Roman Curia. The third part provides an overview of ancient and modern Sino-Western exchanges, also exploring the activities of Western religious and political envoys during the Yuan Dynasty. Professor Yan has dedicated significant effort to the study of Sino-Western exchanges and is proficient in multiple languages, including French, Latin, and English. As a result, these research findings, though over six decades old, remain fresh and innovative in terms of originality and access to sources, and hold unique value in the history of academia. The articles included in Missionaries and Early French Sinology were primarily published in periodicals such as the Literature, Geography, and History Supplement of the Sweeping News newspaper, the Yi Shi Bao in Kunming, and the Construction Research journal organized by the Guangxi Construction Research Society.
