Features: A gate tower, also known as a pailou, was historically called a chuo xie, and is a unique Chinese-style arched gate structure. Although gate towers cannot serve as residential spaces, provide shelter from wind and rain, or be used for worshipping deities to seek blessings, they hold little practical value. From an architectural perspective, they are merely considered "ornamental pieces" within traditional Chinese architecture. However, due to their distinctive appearance, unique aesthetic value, diverse social functions, profound historical roots, and rich cultural significance, gate towers have been recognized as a symbol of Chinese culture for thousands of years. They are regarded as a typical emblem of the ancient Chinese civilization with a long history, representing a unique cultural landscape of traditional Chinese culture and holding a distinctive position in it. Precisely for this reason, not only can we see the presence of gate towers all over the Chinese mainland, but they can also be frequently encountered in places where Chinese or Chinese descendants reside in various continents after stepping abroad and crossing the oceans. Gate towers stand tall on foreign lands as iconic representations of the long-standing Chinese civilization.
