How to handle a baby's stuffy nose with nasal mucus

Patient's question:

A large amount of nasal mucus was found in the baby's nose, making it difficult for the baby to breathe. Especially when sleeping, it couldn't breathe properly and even snored like an adult. Wondering what to do, how to make the baby's nose breathe, how to get the nasal mucus out, or if there are any good methods?

Doctor's answer:

It's normal for babies to have nasal mucus, and it usually doesn't need special attention. You can also use a small pair of tweezers to remove it. It's common for babies to develop nasal mucus due to nasal secretions, and it generally doesn't significantly affect breathing, so it doesn't need to be resolved immediately. The mucus can gradually be expelled with breathing. If you need to remove it, you can do so when the baby is exhaling. If the mucus is slightly loose, you can use tweezers or to gently pull it out. If it's deep inside, it may be difficult to remove, and forcing it could easily hurt the baby.
You can also try expressing a little milk while feeding, one drop in each nostril, and drip it into the baby's nose. The breast milk will act as a lubricant for the nasal passages. Then, gently rub the sides of the baby's nostrils with your fingers and lightly press near the nostrils to see if the mucus comes out. If it doesn't, use a very thin cotton swab to gently swirl inside the nostril and remove the mucus.
This method can be done with either milk or water, but milk is preferable.
