Features: In his critical essay The Flying Vampire, Tournier once said, "A writer's fame and his works' fame often walk side by side, but they can also obscure each other." In this collection of essays brimming with spirit and passion, one of China's most outstanding contemporary critics, Zhang Yongyi, accompanies you on a journey through the night sky of the spirit in search of stars of wisdom. At the same time, the author willingly hides behind the shadows of the masters, living a modest and contented life, because he understands the mysteries of all passions. Readers can only love the immortals—Sterne, Flaubert, Borges, Calvino—not a bookworm or a dandy.
This collection of essays, with its gentle and warm touch, reviews the creative careers of numerous first-class Western writers, including Sterne, Flaubert, Cortázar, and Calvino. The book is divided into five parts, meticulously depicting literary landscapes in different languages and regions, such as English, American, French, Russian, and Latin American. It pays particular attention to novelists and award-winning works after World War II. Whether it's seasoned literary figures like Mailer, Faulks, Tournier, and Kundera, or emerging talents like Wunna, McEwan, and Murakami, along with groundbreaking works like The Street of Hidden Doors, The Name of the Rose, Perfume, and Oscar and Lucinda, they all shine vividly under over a thousand stunning illustrations and more than a hundred bibliographies.
The appendix records the author's personal biases and affections toward modern and contemporary Chinese literature and classical poetry, whether praising or criticizing, without hesitation.
