Baby is 12 days old with high jaundice, how to handle it

Patient's question:

Lately, my boss has said that I'm not in good spirits and it's affecting my work performance. Actually, I don't want to, either. I often can't sleep at night and sometimes feel anxious and uncomfortable. If it gets worse, I'm worried it will affect my health and work. By the way, my baby is 12 days old and has high bilirubin. How should I handle it?

Doctor's answer:

In your case, it may be physiological jaundice. Physiological jaundice is mild when it appears pale yellow, limited to the face and neck, or may affect the trunk, and the sclera may also turn yellow. It usually subsides within 2 to 3 days and the skin color returns to normal by the 5th to 6th day. In severe cases, jaundice may initially affect the head and then spread to the feet, covering the entire body. Vomiting and cerebrospinal fluid may also turn yellow, with the duration lasting more than a week. In some premature infants, it may persist for up to 4 weeks, with the stool still appearing yellow and no bilirubin in the urine. It is recommended to use blue light therapy, which can be effective.
