Publish Date: 2003-12-01
Features: After the Chinese edition of the Complete Works of Aristotle (10 volumes) was completed in 1997, it won several awards, including the Fourth National Book Award (1999) and the First Prize of the Outstanding Achievement Award of the National Social Science Fund (1999). To facilitate readers' use and to share his insights into Western philosophy, especially ancient Greek philosophy, the editor-in-chief of the complete works, Mr. Miao Litian, compiled and selected an annotated Selected Works of Aristotle (including the volumes of Metaphysics, Ethics, and Politics, published in 1999–2000). Over the years, many readers, especially undergraduates and graduate students, have reflected that they need individual volumes of Aristotle's works. To meet this demand, we have published the most influential works of Aristotle (Organon, Physics, Metaphysics, Nicomachean Ethics, Politics, and Rhetoric·Aristotle's Rhetoric·On Poetry) in individual volumes. It should be noted that the translations in the individual volumes largely coincide with those in the Complete Works of Aristotle. Some changes in specific terms and personal names were personally corrected by Mr. Miao Litian during the reprinting of the complete works and the creation of the electronic version. The annotations in the individual volumes are consistent with those in the complete works. The Greek words cited in the footnotes of the complete works are spelled according to the letter table of the Hanyu Pinyin Scheme issued by the state. The introduction and study of classic works of Western philosophy is an endless endeavor. Accurate and perfect translations, as well as in-depth and detailed annotations, let alone creative interpretations and developments, are ideals that can only be approached but never fully achieved. Continuously approaching this ideal relies not only on the efforts of the academic community but also on the promotion of the publishing industry. We are willing to work with the academic community to make continuous contributions to academic progress.
